Adios and Gracias Montevideo

The ICN 2018 ambassadors had a terrific time in Montevideo meeting with some 500 delegates from all parts of the globe in attendance .

The week began with intensive satellite meetings at various locations around Montevideo including the Electric Fish Meeting which, started with a day in the field before continuing its activities at the Instituto de Investigaciones Biológicas Clemente Estable, the crib of the South American E-fish community. The various satellite meetings offered the ideal opportunity for students, novices and experts to come together in a familiar matter to discuss the latest findings in their respective fields and to debate about some provocative thoughts for future endeavours.

The conference’s official opening ceremony started with passionate speeches amongst others by Ana Silva, the Chair of the Local Organizing Committee, Peter Narins, the outgoing ICN president, and Omar Macadar, one of the founding fathers of the South American Neuroethology community. The opening concluded in true Latin-American style with a live Tango concert performance by Mario Penna and band.

Key highlights of the program during the week included deadly eels, vicious cone shells, chimpanzees with super memory, the mathematics behind confidence, scaling brain sizes, and the merge of senses in the pursuit of neuroethological understanding. There was also ample opportunity for the next generation of neuroethologists to learn from the current ‘silver backs’ during various Career-Development Sessions and the Student/Post-Doc Mixer was a warmly welcomed distraction that lasted well into the early morning hours.

The Conference concluded in a celebration of the accomplishments of the ICN 2016 Organisers and delegates at Club Uruguay, showcasing fabulous food and wine from the region followed by vibrant Latin tunes on the dance floor and of course the famous Uruguayan hospitality.
